Bob Singer (b. 1928) is a legendary American animation artist, character designer, layout and background artist, and storyboard director whose work helped shape the golden age of television animation. Best known for his contributions to iconic Hanna-Barbera productions such as The Flintstones, Scooby-Doo, Jonny Quest, The Jetsons, Tom and Jerry, The Smurfs, Super Friends, and Yogi Bear, Bob played a pivotal role in defining the look and feel of Saturday morning cartoons for generations.
Born in Santa Barbara and raised in Santa Paula, California, Bob graduated with honors from the Art Center College of Design in 1955 with a BPA in advertising illustration. He began his career at Carson/Roberts Advertising before moving into animation in 1956, working with leading studios including Warner Bros., UPA Pictures, Marvel, Shamus Culhane, and most extensively, Hanna-Barbera.
Over his 27-year tenure at Hanna-Barbera, Bob served as head of layout, founded the studio’s Character Design Department, and later became art director of publicity and advertising. He also contributed to the animated feature Charlotte’s Web and the UPA film Gay Purr-ee. A passionate educator, he lectured at USC and taught classes in character design, layout, and storyboarding.
In 1988, he co-founded the Singer/Bandy Group, producing children’s media and merchandise, before returning to Hanna-Barbera in 1990 as a storyboard director and animation cel art designer. He retired in 1993 but continued to appear at Warner Bros. Stores worldwide and design limited-edition art.
A member of the Motion Picture Academy since 1964, Bob authored How to Do Animation Storyboards in 1992 and remains an influential voice in the animation industry.
