Who’s a Super Genius?

Bugs Bunny with Wile E. Coyote

Who’s a Super Genius? Well … Wile E. Coyote, of course!

Our newest release, “Who’s a Super Genius?” was created from one of the earlier original Looney Tunes watercolors depicting Wile E. Coyote and Bugs Bunny from the hand of legendary director Chuck Jones (1912 – 2002) created in the mid-1990s. He revisited several of his classic cartoons and very much enjoyed bringing a fresh nuance to the relationships of these characters and cartoons that he created 40 or 50 years before.

Jones was a comic master who pushed his craft and comedic genius forward to present his audience with works that were not only an art form, but that was also witty and entertaining. Robin Williams once called Jones “the Orson Welles of cartoons.” This artwork is no exception … A towel-wrapped Bugs Bunny summoned from the shower by a solicitous Wile E. Coyote, with his foot in the door … Genius.

Classically trained in a variety of media at the Chouinard Art Institute (now CalArts), Jones was a master watercolorist. His deft use of the medium fit his personality and subject matter–it was fresh, light, and funny. Because watercolor is “of the moment” does not diminish the difficulty of the medium, it is unforgiving. Where oil paint and acrylic allow for revisits, watercolor, once applied, is set. With watercolor, Jones deployed his sense of color, using it to define and determine character, place, and thought.
